After a lot of serious games about Greek mythology, it’s refreshing to see a game that has a comical slant. The first encounter with Immortals Fenyx Rising was a pleasant one. I like the cartoony look and it gives the developers the chance to depict the mythical world with a wink. Graphically, Immortals seems to have Fenyx Rising in good order, all the more so because style is chosen over realism. It must be said that you are mainly concerned with keeping an eye on your stamina, because every move makes use of this. A combination of arrows, timing, jumping, dodging, power ups and combat ensure a satisfying end to the battle. In style you will have to get to know this metal giant, after which you will devise a strategy to defeat him. Of course, The Forgelands ends with a final boss called the Clanking Automaton Lieutenant. Everything is recognizable, but again, I am ready for a new game that uses elements from that other franchise. You will also have to move a lot of blocks, roll balls and use wind. Moreover Zelda-fans feel at home with for example Apollo’s Arrows, arrows that you as a player can control yourself and sometimes have to travel through fire first, so that you can light a torch. These are not very original, but they are entertaining and break the gameplay of combat. The creatures offer the necessary challenge, but areas are always accompanied by cool puzzles. These are of course defended by various opponents, including large iron monsters.

The main objective is to reactivate the forges. Our first adventure takes us to The Forgelands, where there is a lot to do. By the way, many monsters will fill almost the entire screen and you will constantly have to find the right combination with powerful attacks and replenishing your stamina meter. The challenge lies in the combination of different moves, because then you get the most spectacle when you defeat different monsters. This will make you feel supreme, while the game isn’t too easy. None of the names are easy, but luckily the action is fast and forgiving. You get various mythological weapons and moves under the buttons such as Hephaistos’s hammer, Athena’s dash, Apollo’s arrows and Herakles’s strenght. In terms of combat, Fenyx Rising is a bit more of a hack ‘n slash game, again a bit like the old God of War games. Finally, I would say, because the way BotW is built is fantastic and it would be a shame if other studios didn’t make a similar game. The way Fenyx can float, the stamina meter, various small vaults (shrines) that you can play to get extra upgrades, catching and riding (mythological) horses, the puzzles and the map design, everything feels like that top game from Nintendo. In terms of gameplay, we can get straight to the point Immortals: Fenyx Rising is heavily based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and that is reflected in almost everything. Zeus responds with “Ugh, the French” and the tone is set with a smile from ear to ear. Zeus proudly says “Ubisoft presents the videogame formerly kown as Gods & Monsters”, after which Prometheus corrects it with the correct (French) pronunciation of the word Ubisoft. In the beginning, this is certainly not the case, when the gentlemen officially announce the game. This Deadpool effect is very refreshing in a game, although the jokes and gags can feel a bit lackluster in the long run. They know that Immortals is a game and they poke fun at it more than once. Prometheus and Zeus act as the storytellers and they constantly break the fourth wall. That already starts with the hilarious voice-overs, because you don’t experience this adventure alone. Greek mythology has often been heavily infused in the past, as you may remember from the ancient ones God of Wargames, but this game basically takes everything down.

Typhon the destroyer of the gods and also the son of Hera. Immortals: Fenyx Rising is set in the heart of Greek mythology, where you take on the role of Fenyx on the mission to defeat Typhon. Welcome to the game previously known as Gods & Monsters.ĭo you want Salim in Peter talk about the game? And do you want to hear Peter horny about the demoist? Listen to GN Podcast # 121 from 27:45 Bye bye fourth wall That is far from bad, because the game has its own face, a good dose of humor and very entertaining gameplay. So often no completely new games are released, although Immortals is clearly based on one of the best games ever made. That was a great experience and after seeing the latest Ubisoft Forward many people are very curious about this new IP.
